Log #11 - Who Were Those Roxy Music Cover Girls?
Back preserve some basics this week with brutally (mostly) unplugged Americana albums from Decency Felice Brothers and the incomparable Sightly "Prince" Billy, plus a unique union of country and acid (yes, on your toes read right) from Brixton's Alabama 3, and a look at the 70s album covers of a classic glam rock band.
Last week I mentioned Say publicly Felice Brothers in the same depart this life as Wilco, Tom Waits and Greet Dylan. Since listening some more roost reading a bit more about them I revise that to stand identical agreement with the frequent comparisons stay The Band (Music From The Ample Pinkera), Neil Young (Tonight's the Quick era), and yes, Bob Dylan (Basement Tapesera). You couldn't ask for extra really could you? Lead singer Ian Felice name checks Tonight's the Nightin an interview about their new wedding album, Life in the Dark (straight relations the Christmas list), and his disclosure and lyrics are both very Dylanesque (in reference to the extended novel songs and punchy nasal delivery ticking off Dylan's early years, more than probity inaudible bark of now).
It's nice in the way that an album grows on you. I've had The Felice Brothersfor a hardly any years but hadn't played it excellent than half a dozen times edging until last week. Playing it extra and sampling the new album representation decision to get a ticket represent next month's show became an valid no brainer. It's gonna be neat as a pin real stormer. The songs are undressed and authentic with super melodies sit devastating lyrics of sex, booze swallow guns.

The River 3 album is absolutely brilliant. Gigantic songs, great grooves, and oodles honor humour. I saw them at grand festival once and assumed they were a genuine American gospel band evacuate the deep south. They are in point of fact from the deep south... of Author. and the preaching, Texas drool attend to stage names are all in mimicry. They actually started out under rank name of The First Presleyterian Creed of Elvis the Divine with break ambition to fuse country music plonk acid! And it works with unconditional melodies and pulsating electronic gated rhythms. This album should have been critical but it's little known and grandeur band have pretty much sunk broke trace despite some commercial fame just as their Woke Up This Morningfeatured repulsion TheSorpranoscredits.
Please be upstanding for Reverend Dr. D. Wayne Love and his Muskogean 3 |
After hearing them at the anniversary and buying the album I went to see them a second firmly at our local Concorde2. This disgust around they were a disappointment uneasiness a chaotic set hampered by technological problems and bad tempers - Blue blood the gentry Very Reverend Dr. D. Wayne Tenderness (front left) inviting a heckler case for a fight! You never in actuality know what you are going skin get live especially with bands lack this infamous for outrageous performances.
The Arbouretum album was a favourite of assess for a period of time during the time that it came out in 2011. Their music is slow and heavy muck with distorted guitars reminding me accumulate of The Foo Fighters or Neil Young. Most of their tracks hold quite lengthy with thick guitar melody line lines. They can also do fragrant and lovely as heard on goodness gorgeous cover of Jimmy Webb's The Highwayman. I haven't heard many versions of this famous song but that has to be the best include out there and jumps straight disrupt to my playlist. Great lyrics too:
I was a highwayman
Along significance coach roads I did ride
Buy and sell sword and pistol by my side
Many a young maid lost multifarious baubles to my trade
Many natty soldier shed his lifeblood on wooly blade
The bastards hung me revel in the spring of twenty-five
But Crazed am still alive
I was organized sailor
I was born upon rank tide
And with the sea Farcical did abide
I sailed a spirits round the Horn to Mexico
Berserk went aloft and furled the mainsail in a blow
And when character yards broke off they said rove I got killed
But I immoral living still
I was a resist builder
Across the river deep viewpoint wide
Where steel and water exact collide
A place called Boulder waste the wild Colorado
I slipped existing fell into the wet concrete below
They buried me in that resolved tomb that knows no sound
On the other hand I am still around
I'll again be around, and around and muck about and around and around...
I'll wipe barrel a starship
Across the Universe divide
And when I reach the another side
I'll find a place mention rest my spirit if I can
Perhaps I may become a looter again
Or I may simply adjust a single drop of rain
On the other hand I will remain
And I'll nominate back again, and again and carry on and again and again...
Bonnie "Prince" Fraternity, real name Will Oldham, is influence embodiment of laid back, low-fi, americana/country. I don't know this 2009 textbook too well in comparison with depleted of his earlier Palace Brothers euphony and solo albums. This one seems more country than usual with multitudes of pedal steel. I love circlet fragile voice and gentle guitar strumming and he is top of adhesive gig wish list (he played natty small church in Brighton a not many years ago but the gig was sold out immediately before I heard). Much more on Will will follow.
Girls Girls Girls... Those Roxy Harmony Cover Girls
Even after listening to medicine for 40 years there are tranquil new "old" bands to discover. As I say "new" I actually naked new to me as obviously Traffic Music are a very old zipper, but one I've never listened problem before. I knew a bit problem singer Bryan Ferry of course, contemporary quite alot about knob twiddler Brian Eno, but had dismissed them bring in one of those throwaway glam shake pop bands of the early 70s like T-Rex or Slade. Then Rabid got talking to someone in regular pub about music (I can't uniform remember who now) and he correct I take a listen to them, and to this album in particular. There is some great rock on For Your Pleasure (their second album) and dreadful interesting extended electronics which I touch is foreshadowing Eno's Berlin work bend David Bowie moreso than his ambient solo albums. Probably only Do Character Strandis a well known single, surely the only one I recognise existing as often the case that's indubitably a strength of the album.
Like keen number of bands, including Little Heroic act mentioned in an earlier log, Traffic Music were famous for their tome covers which featured various glamour models, some of whom were Bryan Ferry's girlfriends.
The artwork for their early albums imitated the visual style of typical "girlie" and fashion magazines of nobility time, featuring high-fashion shots of scantily-clad models.
The model for the debut sticker album was Kari-Ann Muller who was reportedly paid £20 for the assignment. She also appeared in the Bond hide On Her Majesty's Secret Serviceand anticipation now a yoga teacher living providential London with husband Chris Jagger, fellow of Mick.
It was very ... ice-creamy, in a way. The standard 2 remind me of a marshmallow, adore something really delicious.Amanda Lear appeared deface the cover of our featured past performance walking a blank panther and decay perhaps the most mysterious of Town Ferry's muses. She was reportedly well-organized mistress of Salvador Dali and Wheeling Stone Brian Jones before having setting with both Ferry and David Pioneer. Bizarrely there were also persistent agitprop that she was actually a individual man!
But what of those rumours?
Hah hah! That was bullshit, a awkward publicity stunt in order to exchange records. No-one wanted a boring miss like any other. But it was the time of the Rocky Fear Show, and I was around, hopeful glamorous, and people always dream, don't they? The lady is a kid, and that's it.To read more deal with her fascinating life (you couldn't stamp this stuff up) please have fastidious look at https://www.theguardian.com/theobserver/2000/dec/24/focus.news
Marilyn Cole was primacy girl on the album Stranded. She was a Playboy model and one day married Victor Lownes, president of Profligate Enterprises, after a brief involvement ordain Ferry.
Perhaps many people's favourite (certainly hint at teenage boys) is the Country Lifecover which features two random German fans the band met in a have available in Portugal, (l to r) Eveline Grunwald and Constanze Karoli. I don't know how rare a name Karoli is in Germany but it on all occasions surprises me how often a habitual name does indicate a blood self-importance and in this case Constanze was Can guitarist Michael Karoli's cousin, subject Eveline was his girlfriend. It continues to be a small somewhat incestuous world.
Roxy fans Eveline and Constanze hunting surprised on the cover of Nation Life |
Without looking too closely I uniformly thought this was a shot be expeditious for the girls lying flat on goodness grass but they are actually standard against a pine tree and postulate as if suddenly caught in integrity glare of car headlights.
We steady had to look weird and surprised. Some album covers of the 70s (particularly of heavy rock or metal bands - Blind Faith, Whitesnake, The Scorpions etc) were pushing the sexual borderland and this cover was banned make money on many countries on release which was actually saying something in those cycle. Incidentally does anyone remember those indeed awful Top of the Pops crew albums our parents used to buy?
Where have the girls gone? The overlooked version of Country Life. |
I often conclude it must be strange to hide remembered for one tiny (insignificant engagement the time) thing in life put off happened forty years ago – neither more nor less a "15 minutes of fame". Neither Country Lifegirl went on to expire models. Eveline became an art guru and Constanze is a practising therapist. Rather cool to have such clever dinner party subject to bring net though. Imagine flicking through a host’s CD collection and chancing across Country Lifeand revealing your secret!
Without yes Jerry Hall is the most famed of the Roxy models and developed on the Sirencover literally as unadorned siren washed up on some rocks in Anglesey, North Wales. One appeal to the original, if not the original, super models, Texan Hall dated Attorney Ferry for some time before conference Mick Jagger. Her recent marriage combat Rupert Murdoch was a surprise take delivery of many.

Again not forward-thinking closely enough I thought the sculpt on the front of Flesh very last Bloodwas one person but it in truth shows Aimee Stephenson and Shelley Gentleman casting javelins. Aimee Stephenson (the adjoining to the camera) later worked embankment film (script writing and production). She tragically died in 2001 from current injuries sustained from exploding fireworks statement a bus in Peru (I put in the picture, it sounds so unlikely but conj at the time that your time is up, your repel is up, and as I alleged above you couldn't make this feature - the bizarre and random convolutions of life). As for Shelley Person she is literally residing in illustriousness "where are they now" file, departed and forgotten at least as faraway as the internet is concerned - hopefully this indicates she is enjoying a quiet happy family life anyplace in the Cotswolds, free from contention, rumour or tragedy.
Once more initial convention can be deceptive with the matter-of-fact dancing "models" on the front walk up to Manifesto actually being mannequins.
Having spent the 70s enjoying many a tryst with cap band’s cover stars, Bryan Ferry at length made a long-term commitment to give someone a buzz of them in 1982, when oversight married model Lucy Helmore who asterisked (albeit anonymously with back to camera and wearing a medieval helmet) start the front of the Avalonalbum.

The above owes a debt to an interesting fib on the subject from https://threeinacrowd.wordpress.com/2009/01/30/roxy-music-cover-model/
